Counseling is like creating a work of art. It can be messy, beautiful, and transformative, but overall, it is a collaboration between client and therapist. I believe that you are the expert on your life and as such use a person-centered approach leaning into a balance of body, mind, and emotion. Doing so allows me to work with you to identify and reach specific goals, which assist in achieving well-being for emotional, physical and mental health. I enjoy working with a wide array of cultures and lifestyles. I currently offer telehealth sessions and see persons of all ages and backgrounds. I am trained in child and adolescent trauma, adult trauma, EMDR, human sexuality, grief, and somatic therapy, amongst other areas. I have a special focus in women’s trauma, adverse childhood experiences and military trauma, utilizing somatic modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for the treatment of trauma, depression, chronic pain, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction.

You found me! If you're tired of feeling stuck, overwhelmed, riddled with anxiety or struggling with unwanted feelings and want to make a lifestyle change, then you have already taken the first step. I recognize how difficult it can be to seek out therapy and my passion for helping others has encouraged me to develop a supportive environment for clients to engage in treatment. As a therapist, I will actively listen to your experiences and help you process your emotions. I find it important to create a comfortable, nonjudgmental, and safe space for exploration into deeper meaning and understanding. I have experience with individuals specializing in work with adolescents, young adults, and adults. I am trained in therapeutic methods which include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), DBT, psycho-dynamic, IFS, EMDR, person-centered and solution focused therapy. I tailor the process to the needs, preferences, and strengths of each client. My past experience includes providing school-based services along with substance abuse and mental health counseling within outpatient and intensive outpatient care settings. I have experience working with individuals and families in areas including anxiety, depression, trauma, anger management, ADHD, behavioral issues, grief/loss, and adjustment issues.
My work is grounded in the belief that no two people, and no two relationships, are alike in their stories and needs. As a result, therapy with me is highly personalized, and my priority will always be to understand you and/or your relationship within the context of your unique life experiences, beliefs, and goals. I approach therapy as a collaborative, human process and offer a nonjudgmental space for you to be present with yourself, rather than perform. In my experience, this freedom to be you paves the way for the curiosity, insight, and healing needed for real transformation. Though I see clients of all ages and stages, I specialize in working with young adults and couples to build or strengthen their relationships with themselves and others. Anxiety, depression, challenging life transitions, low self-esteem, conflict with friends or family, and issues related to sexuality and intimacy are just a few of the concerns that we can explore and work through together. Using a whole-person, integrative approach, I hope to help you process what’s happening now, while laying the foundation for a more aligned and connected future. If you are looking for a therapist with big-sister energy, you found me! My style is both deeply compassionate and direct, often with a side of dark humor and always underlined by a commitment to ongoing learning. I know I’ve done my job well when you feel both truly understood and gently challenged toward lasting change. If you are considering therapy, I welcome the opportunity to learn more about your story and how I can help you move toward the life and relationships you want.

Hello, my name is Joel. If you are struggling with anxiety, relationships issues, mood changes, or daily struggles of being a student then we can work together on making it better. Difficulties come in all shapes and sizes and are personal to your experience. I have been in the field since 2004 and performing therapy since 2012. This progression with helping clients has been guided by a professional and person centered approach to help you meet your goals and desires. I have helped many students with issues ranging from anxiety, depression, ADHD, relationship, self-esteem, and interpersonal issues. When you choose to work with me you will find an easy going, confidential, and strength based approach that will promote self-awareness, growth, and empowerment. I have an Undergraduate Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Appalachian State University, and a Masters in Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University. I have recently relocated to NC from 7 years in VT and excited to be back in my home state of NC. Therapeutic approaches will include, but not limited to CBT, Reality Therapy, Trauma Informed Care, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, and DBT. If you are having trouble fitting in or confirming to expectations, but still crave a sense of belonging, this is where we can sort it out with warm affirming care. I have 16 years of experience supporting marginalized individuals to learn effective self advocacy techniques and feel comfortable and safe in their current life. All while remaining hopeful about the future! Maybe you are an older person who is adjusting to a life that is different than what you are used to, or a neuro-divergent individual that is stressed out about social expectations, or a LGBTQ+ person looking for support to live as your authentic self. Sometimes our biggest road block to feeling content is ourselves. The way we think about our trauma, and treat our bodies are the first two areas I will explore with you. We will make a plan to be well everyday while you navigate relationships with peers, partners, family and caregivers. We will practice coping strategies to manage overwhelming expectations and most importantly strive for self acceptance.
We are a collaborative of skilled, holistically oriented experienced mental health professionals offering a variety of high quality psychotherapy services in the High Country area. Our center was founded in 2003.

Chris McGinn is a North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who works with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and/or career and education transitional issues. It is Chris’ goal to create a safe, accepting, and comfortable environment to allow you, the client, to grow in self-awareness and self-acceptance. This begins by forming a mutually desirable relationship and bringing focus to your counseling sessions by setting goals that will be re-assessed throughout the counseling process. Chris's general counseling approach is based on the Humanistic perspective, which helps you develop a stronger, healthier sense of self and access and understand your feelings to help gain a sense of meaning in life. Chris utilizes a person-centered, strengths-based approach to help you become your best self: the person you'd be if you just weren't so tired, so anxious, so angry, or so depressed. He believes your work together is to challenge the reasons you feel that way in the first place so you can move past them and start feeling happier, more productive, and more connected to the life you want. He incorporates modalities such as art therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, experiential therapy, play therapy, existential, and trauma-focused therapy in sessions. Chris feels that a client-therapist relationship based on trust and acceptance is the most important element of successful therapy.
